What Kind Of Hippie Were You? Breaking Down All The Social Groups Of the Hippie Golden Days

Fads | March 31, 2018

Hippies. What are they and where do they come from? One would think that these free-spirited people who believe in love, peace and unity would hail from their own little green planet somewhere out there in the universe. But they don’t. They’re conceived and birthed just like the rest of. Most of the time where they start to differ from non-hippies is the way that they were raised.

According Merriam-Webster, a hippie is “usually a young person who rejects established social customs (such as by dressing in an unusual way or living in a commune) and who opposes violence and war”. This way of life began in the United States and United Kingdom in the mid 1960s.

The word hippie came from hipster, a term used to describe people who loved psychedelic music, the use of recreational drugs and embraced the new sexual revolution. And while people often classify hippies into one big group, there are different subcategories of hippie-ism.

The Spiritual Hippie. Spiritual hippies were the most grounded of all the designations. They embrace people of many religions, even if their opinions differ. They are all about energies, auras and consciousness. They are the stargazers, the ones attuned with the planet and the galaxy.

The Old School Hippie. The Old School hippies are the ones who started it all. They called marijuana “grass” and smoked it out of joints. They were the ones who followed bands across the country, living out of their vehicles or whatever cheap motel was available. Their children were also hippies.

The New School Hippie. The New School hippies are the ones whose parents are old school hippies. They were born after the Vietnam War ended. The believe that they were born in the wrong era, and are often frustrated with the attitudes of the people of their generation. All they want is peace.

The Activist Hippie. These are the hippies that one hears about on the news. They make signs and protest numerous different causes, most of which have to do with violence or cruelty. They wear the headbands and the bell-bottom pants with peace signs painted on their faces.

The Eco Activist Hippie. The Eco Activist is the version of the activist that is all about the environment. They don’t wear shoes and don’t eat meat or animal products. The environment is a top priority of theirs. They also work extremely hard to reduce their carbon footprint.

The Artsy Hippie. Those are the hippies who always have an old school camera around their necks, whose faces are always smeared with paint. They have very eclectic tastes and live, breathe and think in color.

The Au Natural Hippies. The Au Natural Hippies are the ones that most people fear. Not because they’re violent or anything along those lines-they’re extremely down to earth and very accepting- but because they do not believe in using anything not created by nature. This means no soap (except the all natural kind), no deodorant, barely any shampoo, you get the point. They love being surrounded by trees.
